Create more waste diversion

Diversion refers to the act of preventing waste from being disposed of in landfills, such as recycling, composting, or reuse. Clean Lane proposes to bring Lane County’s diversion to 63%, 10% higher than current levels.

How is Lane County doing on Diversion?

Lane County is currently #1 in the entire state of Oregon on diversion at 52.9%, 9% higher than any other county. These numbers are tracked by DEQ.

Other Diversion

The Oregon legislature passed the Recycling Modernization Act (Senate Bill 582) during the 2021 legislative session. This will increase our diversion by expanding opportunities to recycle items, like plastics, and we are already paying for it. The program is estimated to spend two billion dollars for the first 10 years.

Some material in garbage emits landfill gas. Clean Lane proposes to capture 90%. 

How is Lane County doing on Landfill gas recovery ?

Lane County has partnered with EPUD (Emerald Peoples Utility Board) for more than 30 years on a landfill gas recovery system that EPUD ratepayers have paid for and benefited from. At the time of the vote EPUD was recovering around 65% of the gas.

EPUDs new system has a capture rate of 87%
